JOHN ZUCKERMAN - VOICE INSTRUCTOR
John Zuckerman is a native of the Los Angeles area and began his performance career in television commercials at the age of seven and made his professional musical theater debut at the age of nine. He picked up the guitar at the age of eleven and began writing songs at the age of twelve and formed the first of many rock bands. He began voice lessons at the age of thirteen at the insistence of his mother and took in interest in classical singing technique. While still playing and singing in bands that gigged regularly in the Los Angeles area, he also acted in musical theater, including a star turn in the title role of in Jesus Christ Superstar at the age of seventeen. During that time he also recorded and produced two studio recordings of original music and co-wrote a musical with two high school friends.
At the age of eighteen, he was accepted into the prestigious vocal program at the University of Southern California. Once enrolled at USC, he dedicated himself vocally to the classical repertoire, and also did a brief stint studying music composition. He appeared in six productions, including leading and supporting roles in The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, and Die Fledermaus, and performed as a back up singer for Barry Manilow. He also made his professional debut in a concert version of The Magic Flute. After finishing at USC, John enrolled in the Masters program at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, where he began studying master teacher Joan Caplan, who is his mentor and voice teacher to this day. He sang in the world premier of the operatic version of The House of the Seven Gables, which was commercially released on Albany records, and made his professional staged opera debut at the age of twenty-three with Opera Theatre of St. Louis. His studies also took him to Florence, Italy, where he studied under legendary tenor Franco Corelli, and to Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart.
After graduating with his Master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music, John continued private study, and also began teaching privately on his own, all while participating in a series of prestigious apprenticeships with Baltimore Opera, the Tanglewood Music Center, and the Caramoor Festival. He took on a particular interest in fitness as it relates to the singer, became certified as a personal trainer, and began working part time at a gym across the street from Lincoln Center in New York, where he worked (and worked out with) many performers from Broadway, New York City Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera. He also took an interest in sports psychology as it relates to the singer and performer, particularly in an audition setting. He began a rigorous study of the bel canto repertoire, the particularly challenging repertoire of early nineteenth century opera, that would later form the core of his own repertoire and would be his ticket to debuts in many theaters.
John made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2006 in Mozart’s Coronation Mass, and his international debut with the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv in 2007. He has been a soloist with the Baltimore Opera, New York City Opera, Opera Orchestra of New York, Virginia Opera, Dayton Opera, the Caramoor Festival, and many others. He returned to Carnegie Hall in 2009, and will make his first appearance in Asia in Hong Kong in 2010. He is now based in the Chicago area, balancing teaching, performing, and being a father of two young children and husband to a very patient wife. |
